Factory Jobs Return, but Employers Find Skills Shortage

BEDFORD, Ohio — Factory owners have been adding jobs slowly but steadily since the beginning of the year, giving a lift to the fragile economic recovery. And because they laid off so many workers — more than two million since the end of 2007 — manufacturers now have a vast pool of people to choose from.

Yet some of these employers complain that they cannot fill their openings.

Plenty of people are applying for the jobs. The problem, the companies say, is a mismatch between the kind of skilled workers needed and the ranks of the unemployed. *snip*

As unlikely as it would seem against this backdrop, manufacturers who want to expand find that hiring is not always easy. During the recession, domestic manufacturers appear to have accelerated the long-term move toward greater automation, laying off more of their lowest-skilled workers and replacing them with cheaper labor abroad.

Now they are looking to hire people who can operate sophisticated computerized machinery, follow complex blueprints and demonstrate higher math proficiency than was previously required of the typical assembly line worker.

Makers of innovative products like advanced medical devices and wind turbines are among those growing quickly and looking to hire, and they too need higher skills.

“That’s where you’re seeing the pain point,” said Baiju R. Shah, chief executive of BioEnterprise, a nonprofit group in Cleveland trying to turn the region into a center for medical innovation. “The people that are out of work just don’t match the types of jobs that are here, open and growing.”

Let's stop this here before the Right Honorable Mr. Shah can build up a full head of steam. Whenever, and I do mean whenever you find an elite, especially one who isn't White suggesting that Americans just aren't smart enough? No level of cynicism can be considered too high.

It took me all of two minutes to find this jerk calling for the importation of cheap, servile, quasi-slave labor...

Talented skilled immigrants are needed to power U.S. companies, said Shah. But many of these doctors, engineers and medical workers cannot obtain the H-1B visa necessary to work in private enterprise here. Several years ago, 225,000 H-1B visas were issued. Current law allows only 65,000. All the spots were snapped up within the first few hours of this year’s immigration lottery, Shah added.

Those who can’t get a visa are forced to return to their home countries or go elsewhere. Ironically, the U.S. has invested heavily in the education of many of these immigrants, who attended universities here, Shah said. Many have gone to work in Europe or Canada, which has welcomed them.

Microsoft last year opened a new software development office in Vancouver to retain talented workers who can’t get a visa to work in the U.S. Immigrants are key to new high-tech businesses, Shah said; 25% of science and technology companies, from Intel to Transtar Industries in Cleveland, were founded by those not born in the U.S.

Well. well, well. Suddenly we have to start asking uncomfortable questions like: who is this guy actually working for? Who does he offer his loyalty too? How can we believe anything he, or the Three Monkey Media say when he, and they don't reveal that what he's really after is cheap quasi-slave labor.

And before you embarrass yourself by trying to suggest that "oh, but they tried to hire Americans?" I promise you, they didn't.

I think its worth noting that what sane people have known all along, that globalization and outsourcing have wreaked havoc on the American worker. Just how much damage has it done? Ahem...

58% Favor English-Only Election Ballots

The U.S. Justice Department has told a major Ohio county to print bilingual ballots for the November election or it will be sued by the government. But most voters believe that election ballots in this country should be printed only in English.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 58% of Likely Voters favor English-only ballots. But this is down 10 points from June 2006. Thirty-eight percent (38%) disagree and say election ballots should be printed in both English and Spanish.

The Political Class is more emphatic. While 68% of Mainstream voters believe ballots should only be in English, 78% of those in the Political Class think they should be available in English and Spanish.

Still, 84% of all voters think English should be the nation’s official language. Just 13% disagree.

This finding has remained constant in surveys for over four years.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters U.S. Voters was conducted on August 11-12, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Three-out-of four voters (75%) also continue to believe that companies should be allowed to require their employees to speak English on the job. Only 16% oppose such a requirement.

Just 12% of voters believe that requiring employees to speak English is a form of racism or bigotry. Seventy-nine percent (79%) reject that notion and believe the requirement is not racist or bigoted.

Both these findings, too, are virtually unchanged from when the questions were first asked in November 2007.

Seventy-six percent (76%) of Republicans and 60% of voters not affiliated with either major party say election ballots should be printed only in English. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Democrats believe they should be printed in English and Spanish.

But most Democrats agree with Republicans and unaffiliateds that English should be the official language of the United States. There is little disagreement on this question across all demographic categories.

There is also majority agreement across all groups about requiring English on the job and a common belief that such a requirement is not bigotry or racism.

In the mist of the 2008 campaign, then-candidate Barack Obama said it is more important for American children to learn to speak Spanish than it is for new immigrants into this country to learn to speak English. Voters strongly disagreed, with 83% saying a higher priority should be placed on encouraging immigrants to speak English as their primary language.

In a separate survey at the time, 42% of voters said most government officials encourage immigrants to retain the culture of their home country rather than to fully embrace American culture and society. Thirty-two percent (32%) disagreed. But 83% expressed more anger at the government for the way it handles immigration than anger at the immigrants themselves who are looking for jobs.

With midterm elections less than three months away, nearly two-out-of-three voters (65%) remain at least somewhat angry at the current policies of the federal government in all areas, including 40% who are Very Angry.

Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters oppose the Justice Department’s decision to challenge Arizona’s new immigration law in court. Fifty-four percent (54%) think the Justice Department instead should take legal action against cities that provide sanctuary for illegal immigrants. Even more think the federal government should cut off funds to these “sanctuary cities.”

Fifty-nine percent (59%) of voters favor passage of a law like Arizona’s in their own state. Most voters (53%) now say it’s better for individual states to act on their own to enforce immigration laws rather than relying on the federal government for enforcement.

Fifty six percent (56%), in fact, believe the policies of the federal government encourage people to enter the United States illegally.

Most Americans still oppose granting U.S. citizenship automatically to children born in America to illegal immigrants.

 

And the truth is that as they say on AGT Americans really do tend to get it right or, how many times will Americans have to say no to Gay marriage before our opponents will accept that America isn't Europe?

Our elites simply assume that the younger set welcome their coming dispossession and ethnic replacement, a position I've always disagreed with but, haven't had any hard numbers to back it up with. Well, *cough-cough* ahem...

- 69% of black teenagers believe their standard of living will be higher than their parents, but only 36% of White teenagers expect this to be true.

- 70% of black teenagers give Barack Obama a favorable approval rating, but only 21% of White teenagers approve of his job performance.

- 92% of black adults approve of Barack Obama’s job performance, but only 35% of White adults give him a positive approval rating.

Just for grins and giggles it should be noted that among Whites those who whinge the loudest and most annoyingly on the subject of race also tend to live in the Whitest areas in America, how's that for a heaping helping O'irony?

Race is a real and stubborn thing and I think its worth mentioning that American Whites have been subjected to a relentless campaign of racial reeducation for the last fifty years and yet in all the ways that matter they've hardly moved the needle.

See if you can follow along: the EEOC is claiming that not wanting to hire criminals or deadbeats is racist because minorities tend to be criminals and deadbeats at much higher rates than Whites, my head hurts...

EEOC: Don’t want to hire crooks with credit problems? You’re a racist!

Try to follow the logic here: If you’d rather not hire people who have criminal records or bad credit histories, you might be a racist. So says the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The EEOC, which apparently exists for the purpose of reaching such bizarre conclusions, makes this claim because a disproportionate number of those with bad credit and rap sheets are minorities. Thus, employment practices that take a dim view of such things are, by definition, discriminatory.

And you want to be my latex salesman.

Now you, the prospective employer protest: You don’t care if the would-be employee is black, white, yellow, red or Alabama crimson. Hiring criminals with credit problems is foolishness up with which you will not put. It has nothing whatsoever to do with race. It is simply smart business.

The EEOC doesn’t even dispute you on your motivation. It may very well have nothing to do with race. The EEOC doesn’t care. It’s still discrimination because the average minority is more likely to be negatively impacted by your policy, even if that’s not what you intend.
